Headteacher’s Message

10th July 2020

Dear Parent/Carer

You will be aware that the Government have released its detailed guidance for the planned return to school for all students in September. We are excited to be able to welcome all of our students back to Campion to access a full-time education, although clearly there is much to do in order to be prepared.  This letter sets out how we will respond to the new guidance released by the government.

It is clear we cannot create a totally risk-free environment. However, the work we have already done to prepare for the Autumn term makes us confident that we can balance and minimise risk from Covid 19, whilst providing a full education experience for all students.  We have been preparing so we can be agile in response to what could be a changing situation.  We will always prioritise health and safety; we know that you need to be confident in our ability to manage and make safe decisions in a sometimes rapidly changing situation.

There are a number of principles driving our detailed planning now.  Rigorous implantation of the Public Health England ‘system of controls’ will reduce the risk of transmission and make the school safer, therefore our actions will be driven by this.  This will include:

  1. Reviewing our current risk assessments and operational procedures to make sure people who are ill stay at home and our immediate response to anyone with symptoms is secure and confident.

  2. Reviewing our systems and facilities in place to support robust hand and respiratory hygiene when all students and staff have returned to school.

  3. Reviewing our cleaning arrangements so that we can maintain enhanced hygiene across the school site.

  4. Ensuring we are absolutely clear about how active engagement with NHS test and trace will work as more staff and students return to site, so that we continue to keep everyone as safe as possible.

We are revising the running of the school to reduce contact and maximise distancing between those in school where ever possible, minimising the potential for contamination so far as is reasonably practical.  In line with the guidelines, our initial planning will consider;

  1. Working closely with Northampton County Council to organise safe transportation on all bus routes

  2. Minimising student movement around the school site

  3. Implementing a one-way system around the site for all staff and students

  4. Staggering break and lunch times

  5. Ensuring that staff are able to maintain distance from students and other staff by arranging our classrooms and modifying shared areas to accommodate this

  6. Rigorous risk assessment of practical subjects so that we are clear how we will ensure our students continue to have a broad and balanced experience whilst keeping safe.

  7. Reviewing our behaviour policy to highlight the responsibility of all students to keep themselves, their peers and our staff safe

  8. A phased re-introduction of our extra-curricular provision.

What have we done so far in readiness for the planning that needs to take place for wider opening in September?

We have written and revised our September timetable in line with our risk assessments.  We have also worked closely with other local school leaders across the SWAN network to share approaches and planning for each of thescenarios we may face in September.

We recognise that for all students and staff this will be a change to their Campion school daily experience, therefore we have planned a staggered school return for all year groups to allow time for them to become familiar with the systems in place to ensure they feel safe and confident in readiness for learning.
